German Salary & Tax Calculator
Gross to net for 2026, with all six Steuerklassen, church tax, every social insurance branch, and a TV-L public-sector pay lookup.
This looks like a Midijob. Between €603.01 and €2,000/month, contributions are reduced on a sliding scale that isn't modelled in detail here — your real net pay is likely a little higher than shown.
Steuerklasse uses a standard simplified approximation of the official withholding procedure. For a legally binding number, use the official BMF Lohnsteuerrechner.
What this calculator does and doesn't model
Income tax, Solidaritätszuschlag, church tax, and all four social insurance contributions use the exact official 2026 rates and formulas — every one cited with a source below. Steuerklasse III uses the real splitting mechanism; V and VI use standard simplified approximations of the official withholding procedure, since the full BMF algorithm for those classes spans dozens of pages. Not modelled: the Midijob sliding-scale reduction, private health insurance (PKV), and one-off payments like Weihnachtsgeld. For a legally binding number, use the official BMF Lohnsteuerrechner.
German salary calculator FAQ
How accurate is this German salary calculator?
The income tax formula, Solidaritätszuschlag, church tax rates, and all social insurance rates and ceilings are the exact official 2026 figures, cited at the bottom of this page. Steuerklasse III, V and VI use standard simplified approximations of the official withholding procedure, the same approach most non-official calculators use, since the full BMF algorithm for those classes runs to dozens of pages. For a legally binding figure, use the official BMF Lohnsteuerrechner or ask a Steuerberater.
Which Steuerklasse should I choose?
Single, divorced or widowed: Klasse I. Single parent living alone with at least one child: Klasse II. Married and the higher earner (your spouse takes V): Klasse III. Married with broadly similar incomes: Klasse IV for both. Married and the lower earner (your spouse takes III): Klasse V. Second or additional job: Klasse VI, which has no tax-free allowance at all.
Why is my net pay in Steuerklasse V or VI so much lower?
Classes V and VI have little to no tax-free allowance built into the monthly withholding, because the system assumes the allowance is already being used on your (or your spouse's) main payslip under Klasse III or IV. It evens out at the annual tax return, but the monthly number looks harsh on its own.
What is the Solidaritätszuschlag and do I still pay it?
It is a 5.5% surcharge on your income tax, originally introduced to fund reunification costs. Since 2021, roughly 90% of taxpayers no longer pay it: in 2026 you are exempt if your annual income tax is under €20,350 (single) or €40,700 (jointly assessed couples). Above that, a mitigation zone phases it in gradually.
What are the four social insurance contributions taken from my pay?
Rentenversicherung (pension, 18.6% total), Arbeitslosenversicherung (unemployment, 2.6% total), Krankenversicherung (health, 14.6% plus an average 2.9% Zusatzbeitrag in 2026), and Pflegeversicherung (long-term care, 3.6%, more if you are childless and over 23). Each is split roughly between you and your employer, up to a contribution ceiling.
What is TV-L and how do I find my pay grade?
TV-L is the collective wage agreement covering public-sector employees of Germany's federal states (universities, schools, public administration). Your contract specifies an Entgeltgruppe (E1 to E15, roughly by qualification level) and an Erfahrungsstufe (experience step, 1 to 6, which rises automatically over time). Select both above to load your exact monthly gross salary.
Why does my Pflegeversicherung rate change based on children?
Since 2023, childless employees over 23 pay a 0.6 percentage point surcharge, while parents with two or more children under 25 get a 0.25 point discount per child (up to five). It is one of the few contributions that varies by family size rather than income.
Why is Saxony different?
In 1995, Saxony kept the Buß- und Bettag public holiday instead of abolishing it to help fund the new long-term care insurance, as every other state did. As compensation, Saxon employees pay a larger share of the Pflegeversicherung contribution (roughly 1 percentage point more) than employees anywhere else in Germany.
What is a Midijob and are the results still accurate there?
Between €603.01 and €2,000 a month (the Übergangsbereich), employees pay reduced social insurance contributions on a sliding scale while keeping full benefit entitlement. This calculator flags when your salary falls in that range but does not model the exact sliding-scale formula, so your real net pay there will likely be a little higher than shown.
Is my salary data uploaded anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you enter is sent to a server, logged, or stored.

How German income tax actually works
Germany taxes income progressively, but not with the flat brackets you might be used to. The first €12,348 you earn in 2026 is tax-free (the Grundfreibetrag). Above that, the marginal rate climbs smoothly along a curve defined by a formula in §32a of the Income Tax Act, from 14% right above the threshold up to 42% around €69,879, then flat at 42% up to €277,825, then 45% beyond that. There are no sudden jumps between brackets the way a stepped system works; every additional euro is taxed at a rate that increases gradually, which is why a small raise rarely pushes your whole income into a much higher bracket the way people sometimes fear.
Which Steuerklasse is right for you
Your Steuerklasse (tax class) determines how much tax gets withheld from your monthly paycheck, not your final tax bill for the year, that gets reconciled at tax return time regardless. Single, divorced or widowed employees use Klasse I. A single parent living alone with at least one child qualifies for the more generous Klasse II. Married couples choose between III/V (one spouse takes III and gets a bigger allowance, the other takes V and gets almost none, useful when incomes are very different) or IV/IV (both taxed as if single, better when incomes are similar). A second or additional job almost always falls under Klasse VI, which carries no tax-free allowance at all, since the system assumes you are already using it on your main job.
Why Klasse V and VI look so brutal on paper
If you have ever seen a Klasse V or VI payslip next to a Klasse I one at the same gross salary, the difference is startling. That is by design, not a penalty. The withholding system assumes the tax-free allowance is being used somewhere else already, either by your spouse’s Klasse III payslip or by your own main job, so it withholds tax on nearly the full amount. Nothing is actually lost. At the end of the year, a married couple on III/V or an employee with two jobs (main job plus Klasse VI) files a joint or combined tax return, and the true, correctly calculated tax liability is settled then, usually with a refund for whoever overpaid through the year.
The Solidaritätszuschlag: mostly gone, but not for everyone
The Soli started in 1991 to help fund reunification costs and East German infrastructure. Since a 2021 reform, roughly 90% of taxpayers no longer pay it at all. For 2026, you owe nothing if your annual income tax is under €20,350 (single) or €40,700 (married, jointly assessed). Above that, it does not jump straight to the full 5.5% either, a mitigation zone phases it in gradually, so crossing the threshold by a few euros costs you a few cents, not hundreds of euros.
Kirchensteuer only applies if you are a member
Church tax is collected alongside income tax, but only from registered members of a recognised religious community, mainly the Catholic and Evangelical churches, in Germany. The rate is 8% of your income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, 9% everywhere else. If you formally leave your church (an Austritt, done at your local registry office), the obligation stops from the following month. Many expats moving to Germany are simply never registered as members and pay nothing here at all.
The four social insurance contributions, one by one
Rentenversicherung (pension insurance, 18.6% total, split evenly) builds your entitlement to the German state pension. Arbeitslosenversicherung (unemployment insurance, 2.6% total) funds Arbeitslosengeld if you lose your job. Krankenversicherung (health insurance, 14.6% general rate plus an average Zusatzbeitrag of 2.9% in 2026, both split with your employer) covers your statutory health cover, the exact Zusatzbeitrag varies slightly by Krankenkasse, so check yours and adjust the field above if you know it. Pflegeversicherung (long-term care insurance, 3.6% base rate) funds care costs later in life; childless employees over 23 pay a 0.6 percentage point surcharge, entirely on their own side, while parents with two or more children under 25 get a discount per child.
Minijobs and Midijobs
Below €603 a month (2026), a job counts as a Minijob: the employee pays no social insurance contributions at all (aside from a small, usually waived pension opt-out), while the employer covers a flat-rate contribution instead. Between €603.01 and €2,000 a month, you are in the Übergangsbereich, commonly called a Midijob: you get full social insurance coverage, but your own contribution is reduced on a sliding scale that increases smoothly from close to zero at the bottom of the range up to the standard full rate at €2,000. This calculator flags when your entered salary falls in that range, since the sliding-scale formula itself is not modelled here.
TV-L: how public-sector pay works
TV-L (Tarifvertrag der Länder) is the collective wage agreement covering employees of Germany’s federal states, universities, schools, public administration and university hospitals (though not every state; Hesse has its own separate agreement). Your contract places you in an Entgeltgruppe from E1 to E15, roughly corresponding to qualification level and responsibility, and an Erfahrungsstufe from 1 to 6, which increases automatically as you gain tenure in the role, independent of performance review. Selecting your group and step above loads your exact current monthly gross salary directly into the calculator.
What this calculator doesn’t model, on purpose
Steuerklasse III uses the real splitting mechanism (your income is halved, taxed, then doubled). Classes V and VI use standard simplified approximations of the official withholding procedure that most non-official calculators rely on, since the full Bundesministerium der Finanzen algorithm for those classes runs to dozens of pages of pseudocode. The Midijob sliding-scale reduction, private health insurance (PKV), and one-off payments like Weihnachtsgeld are not modelled at all. None of this is a substitute for the official BMF Lohnsteuerrechner or a conversation with a Steuerberater, especially for anything beyond a standard single-job salary.
