Why four different numbers, not one
"Ideal weight" formulas were developed decades apart by different researchers, mostly for drug-dosing calculations in medicine (working out a dose from lean body weight), not as a fitness target: Hamwi (1964), Devine (1974), Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983). They don't agree with each other by design, each one fit its own reference population, and none of them account for build, muscle mass, or bone structure. Showing all four next to the BMI-based healthy range gives you the actual spread these methods produce, rather than presenting a single number with a false sense of precision that one formula alone can't really deliver.

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
None of them is definitively "correct", they were built decades apart for different purposes, mostly medication dosing rather than fitness. That is exactly why this calculator shows all four together with the BMI-range weight, so you see the real spread rather than one formula's answer presented as the single truth.
Why do the four formulas give different numbers for the same height?
Hamwi (1964), Devine (1974), Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) were each fit to their own reference population using slightly different coefficients. The gap between them is usually a few kilograms, which is itself useful information about how much any single "ideal weight" number should be trusted.
Should I aim for exactly this weight?
Treat it as a reference range, not a target to hit precisely. None of these formulas account for muscle mass, bone structure or frame size, a broad-framed, muscular person and a small-framed person of the same height can both be perfectly healthy at meaningfully different weights.
What if I am under 5 feet (152 cm) tall?
All four formulas were derived from adult heights of 60 inches (5 feet) and up. Below that, the calculator still computes a result and flags it, but treat the number as a rough extrapolation rather than a formula that was actually fitted to that height range.

These formulas weren’t built for fitness goals
Hamwi, Devine, Robinson and Miller were developed between 1964 and 1983, mostly to help clinicians estimate lean body weight for calculating medication doses, not to hand someone a fitness target. They were never validated against athletic performance or aesthetic goals, which is worth remembering before treating any single one of these numbers as something to chase.
Why we show all four instead of picking a favorite
Most calculators quietly pick one formula and present it as the answer. The four numbers here typically span a few kilograms for the same height, and that spread is genuinely informative, it shows you the range different reputable methods land in rather than a false sense of precision from one arbitrary choice. The healthy BMI-range weight sits alongside them as a fifth, differently-derived reference point.
Frame size and muscle mass aren’t in any of these formulas
None of the four account for whether you’re naturally broad or narrow framed, or how much muscle you carry, both of which shift what a genuinely healthy weight looks like for your specific body.
