What DPI actually means for a print

The number exists because most people can’t resolve detail finer than that at the distance they normally hold a print, a photo album, a magazine page, something a foot or two from your face. Move the print further away, a poster on a wall, a banner across a storefront, and the eye simply can’t tell the difference at 300 DPI versus 150, which is exactly why large-format printing gets away with dramatically lower resolution and still looks sharp.

Pixel count is the one number that doesn’t lie

Megapixel marketing and camera-generation hype aside, what actually determines your maximum honest print size is the pixel dimensions of the specific file you’re printing, cropped, resized, or otherwise, not your camera’s spec sheet. Upscaling software can interpolate between those pixels convincingly, but it isn’t recovering detail your camera never captured, treat the real pixel count as the ceiling and anything past it as a compromise you’re consciously choosing to make.
