The rules this validator actually enforces

I, X, C and M can repeat up to three times in a row (III = 3, XXX = 30); V, L and D never repeat. Subtraction only works one step (or occasionally two) below: I can come before V or X, X before L or C, C before D or M, and nothing else subtracts. A form like IIII, VX or IC breaks one of these rules and gets rejected rather than silently guessed at.

Why is IIII wrong for 4, when I see it on some clocks?

Modern standard Roman numerals use subtractive notation, IV, for 4, not four I's in a row. Clock faces using IIII are a real but separate tradition (partly for visual symmetry opposite VIII, partly historical), not the standard form taught in school or used in formal writing. This tool follows the standard modern convention and treats IIII as invalid.

Why does VX get rejected instead of being read as 5?

Subtraction in Roman numerals only works going into the next one or two values up (I before V or X, X before L or C, C before D or M), and V, L and D can never be the smaller number in a subtractive pair. VX breaks that rule, so it isn't a valid Roman numeral at all, not "5" and not any other number.

What is the largest number standard Roman numerals can represent?

Without extra notation, 3999 (MMMCMXCIX), since standard rules only allow up to three consecutive M's and there is no single symbol for 5,000. Larger numbers historically used a line over a numeral to multiply it by 1,000, rarely used today and not handled by this converter.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

Not in the standard system, Roman numerals were designed for counting and record-keeping, where zero wasn't a practical necessity the way it is in positional number systems. A rarely-used medieval convention used the word "nulla," but it never became part of standard numeral notation.

Why IIII is wrong, even though clocks use it

Standard modern Roman numerals write 4 as IV, subtracting one I from V, not as four I’s stacked up. Clock faces are a genuine exception, but a decorative one: IIII shows up there mostly for visual balance opposite VIII on the other side of the dial, not because it’s the correct standard form. Outside of that specific tradition, IIII is simply invalid, and this converter treats it that way rather than guessing what you probably meant.

The subtraction rule most people never learn explicitly

Only I, X and C can ever act as the smaller number in a subtractive pair, and only by exactly one or two steps up: I before V or X, X before L or C, C before D or M. V, L and D can never subtract from anything. That single rule is why VX, IL and IC are all invalid, even though each one “looks like” it should mean something (5, 49, 99), none of them follow the actual subtraction pattern Roman numerals use.

Why there’s no Roman numeral above roughly 4,000

Standard notation caps out at 3,999, written MMMCMXCIX, because the rules only allow up to three repeated M’s and there’s no symbol for 5,000 to subtract from. Historically, larger numbers used a horizontal line drawn over a numeral to multiply its value by 1,000, but that convention is rare enough today that this converter, like virtually every modern context using Roman numerals, sticks to the standard 1-3999 range.
