Solving backward for the score you need on the final sometimes returns a number over 100%, meaning the target isn't reachable even with a perfect score, and sometimes returns a number at or below 0%, meaning you've already secured that grade regardless of the final. Both are real, useful answers, not errors, which is why this calculator states them plainly instead of only ever showing a percentage that might quietly be impossible.

How do I find out what I need on my final exam?
Switch to "What do I need" mode, enter your current grade going into the final, how much the final is worth as a percentage of the course, and the grade you want to end up with. The calculator solves the weighted-average equation backward for the one unknown, the score you need on the final, including telling you honestly if the target is mathematically out of reach.
What if a category is weighted 0% or I leave it blank?
A 0% weight means that category contributes nothing to the final grade regardless of the score entered, which is occasionally correct (an ungraded practice assignment) but usually means you meant to enter a real weight. Weights across all categories should add to 100% for the result to represent your actual course grade correctly.
Does this account for extra credit?
Indirectly: enter extra credit as a normal assignment with the points you earned and the points it was possible to earn. If extra credit at your school can push a category above 100%, enter it that way and the weighted math will correctly reflect the boost.
Why is a weighted average different from a simple average?
A simple average treats every assignment as equally important. A weighted average, what most real course grades actually use, lets a final exam worth 40% of the grade matter far more than a homework set worth 2%, which is exactly why "I got 90% of my homework but failed the final" and "the final is 40% of my grade" are the same statement seen from two different angles.

The “what do I need” mode takes your current grade, the final’s weight, and your target grade, and solves the weighted-average equation for the one unknown: the score you need. It’s the exact same equation as calculating a current grade, just isolating a different variable, the same “solve backward from verified forward math” approach that makes a reverse calculation trustworthy instead of a separate guess.
An honest answer can be “impossible” or “already done”
Sometimes the required score comes out above 100%, meaning the target isn’t reachable even with a perfect final, and sometimes it comes out at or below 0%, meaning the grade is already secured no matter what happens on the final.
