How the calculation works
Monthly bandwidth = page views × average page size. Then a CDN (Cloudflare, BunnyCDN, Cloudflare's free tier, etc.) shifts most static requests off your origin server, so origin bandwidth = raw × (1 − cache ratio). The safety buffer covers admin traffic, bot crawlers, and traffic spikes. Divide the monthly figure by 30 for a rough daily average, or multiply by roughly 1.5 for a busy-day peak.

The web average sits around 2.2 MB per page in 2026, but a well-optimised blog or portfolio can be well under 1 MB. Image-heavy or video-embedded pages often exceed 5 MB. Check your own site with a tool like PageSpeed Insights before assuming a number.
Do I need a CDN?
A CDN caches your static files (images, CSS, JS, sometimes HTML) at edge locations closer to your visitors, which reduces both origin bandwidth and page load time. Why “unlimited bandwidth” isn’t really the point
Most shared hosts advertise unlimited bandwidth in their marketing, then bury a fair-use clause in the terms. The clause almost never bites small sites, but it does mean the honest question isn’t “will I run out?” but rather “will my host slow me down when my traffic spikes?” A realistic bandwidth estimate helps you pick a tier where your peak day still has headroom, not just your average day.
The CDN cache ratio does most of the work
Turning on Cloudflare’s free tier (or BunnyCDN, or your host’s built-in CDN) typically shifts 60-80% of static traffic off your origin server. Where the safety buffer number comes from
Real hosting traffic includes more than the pages your visitors see. There’s bot crawlers indexing your site (Googlebot, Bingbot, plus a long tail of less useful ones), your own admin logins, plugin and theme update downloads, WordPress cron pinging every fifteen minutes, and outbound email if your site sends any. The 10% default covers most of that. Bump it to 20% or 30% if you run a busy admin, WooCommerce store, or a site with an active membership area.
